Where is golf's future generation coming from? Will our children become
interested in golf from watching our current heroes Tiger and Annika?
You may not think that this is a huge concern but the jobs, upkeep and construction of future courses will depend on the number of new golfers that join the ranks. The Mutual of Omaha and the Golf Channel have developed a wonderful opportunity for children ages 7-14 to experience the thrill of
the game.
This year these two Corporations plus several other assisting sponsors will arrive with their custom bus filled with the equipment to set up Drive, Chip and Putt competitions in 100 different locations in the US. An average of 200 to 250 children attend each competition location and for 4 hours compete in 1 of 4 age groups ( 7-8,9-10, 11-12, 13-14 year olds) in the 3 golfing skills events.
Our Experience at Drive, Chip and Putt Junior Golf Skills Competition
Our 9 year old granddaughter, Vicki, participated in the Drive, Chip and
Putt at Mangrove Golf Course in St. Petersburg on Valentine's Day. Vicki took up the game of golf 2 days before so we had no hopes for
victory. The kind officials became her golf coaches and taught her how to tee off. The crowd
cheered when her putts were successful.
Players were congratulated for even minor successes. They were even
supported when their game wasn't up to par. There were no derogatory comments
and the children were treated like pros.
Everyone had a great time. Each child received a T-shirt, and picture of themselves, a goodie bag which included a sleeve of balls, animal stickers, pencil, and a catered lunch by the corporate sponsors.
Vicki went home feeling like a winner and negotiated a golf bag and clubs from her biggest fans . . . her Dad & Grandparents. She is making plans to take lessons supplemented with instruction from her Dad and Pa.
Drive, Chip and Putt introduced a new golfer to the joy of game.
We wish to thank Mutual Omaha, the Golf Channel and the various other
sponsors for a wonderful experience. They are making a great contribution to the future of golf with these
events.
